The driver hands back the single line token to the signalman at Clayton West Junction after leaving the threatened Clayton West branch with the 16.37 Clayton West - Huddersfield on 27 August 1980. The line was already facing closure and finally succumbed in January 1983. Coal traffic had been the mainstay of the branch and stored coal wagons can be seen in the adjacent sidings. The end of the coal traffic meant the line became uneconomic. The trackbed of the branch is now occupied by the 15" gauge Kirklees Light Railway, whilst the signalbox survived until 1989 when the top half was transported to a site not far away and on a new brick base still forms a dwelling!
